What Are Physical and Occupational Therapies?

Physical therapy and occupational therapy involve the treatment of biomechanical dysfunction, disability, and functional impairments or limitations that interfere with a patient's work, play or other activities of daily living. These conditions may result from disease, injury or pathological processes.

Valir's team of licensed physical and occupational therapists evaluate, diagnose and treat patients for these disorders using a variety of treatment techniques. Our therapists evaluate a patient's strength, balance, range of motion, coordination, endurance, posture and functional movement in developing a customized treatment plan and then help the patient achieve specific rehabilitation goals and objectives.

Outpatient therapy incorporates the use of exercise to stretch and strengthen muscles and to improve posture, balance, gait and endurance. To help reduce pain and improve movement, therapists utilize heat, cold, ultrasound, iontophoresis, fluidotherapy, traction machines, massage and electrical stimulation, as appropriate. Assistive devices, such as crutches, canes and walkers, are often used to improve gait mechanics.

Throughout the rehabilitative process, our therapists document progress, evaluate findings and modify individual treatment plans as necessary. A patient's progress is reported to the referring physician, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and physician support staff with the goal of helping the patient reach maximum functional independence.
